A top immigration expert in Washington has warned that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to end H-1B visas would hurt Americans. Sarah Pierce, Director of Social Policy at Third Way, said the plan would slash access to essential workers, especially in healthcare.
Greene has pledged to introduce a bill that bans H-1B visas in every sector except medicine. She said she wants to cut the annual cap to 10,000 visas, down from 85,000. She also said this exemption could disappear within a decade. Her proposal would also block any path to citizenship and force workers to return home.
Pierce argued that the bill would leave rural areas without enough doctors. She said the current programme brings in far more than 10,000 medical staff each year. She warned that families would face longer wait times and more preventable deaths.
She admitted that some US tech workers lost jobs due to visa issues. But she called Greene’s plan dishonest and dangerous. She said gutting the programme would weaken the economy and cripple key industries.
The White House said it plans to stop abuses in the system, not remove it. Trump recently said the US still needs foreign talent. Legal battles over new visa fees continue, while Indian workers remain the largest group of beneficiaries.
