Haryana DGP Sent on Leave Amid Probe Into IPS Officer’s Suicide
Amid growing public and political pressure over the alleged suicide of senior IPS officer Puran Kumar, the Haryana government has sent Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer serving as Additional Director General of Police, was found dead from a gunshot wound at his residence in Chandigarh on October 7.
Initial reports suggest suicide, but the circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious questions, with calls for an impartial investigation intensifying. Family members and colleagues have hinted at professional stress and possible harassment. The state government’s move to relieve the DGP is seen as an attempt to ensure transparency in the ongoing inquiry.
Opposition parties have demanded a CBI probe, citing potential conflict of interest if state agencies lead the investigation. The incident has sparked a wider debate about mental health and systemic pressure within the police force.
