IMA calls Minister’s approval for Ayurvedic doctors performing surgeries ‘misleading and unscientific’

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called the Health Minister’s recent approval for Ayurvedic doctors to perform certain surgeries “misleading and unscientific.” The decision, announced on December 23, allows Ayurvedic doctors who have completed postgraduate courses in surgical studies to conduct select surgical procedures.
IMA leaders in Vijayawada expressed concern that the move could compromise patient safety. They argued that surgery requires rigorous clinical training, which, according to them, is not part of standard Ayurvedic education. The association warned that integrating traditional medicine with modern surgical practice without proper safeguards may endanger patients.
The Health Minister described the step as an effort to integrate Indian traditional medicine with modern treatment methods. However, the IMA said the decision lacked adequate scientific evidence and proper consultation with medical experts.
IMA calls the approval “misleading and unscientific” and urged the government to reconsider the decision. They stressed that patient safety and adherence to evidence-based medical practice must remain the top priority.
