India Advances to 2nm Chip Design in Semiconductor Mission

India 2nm chip design milestone achieved with ARM Bengaluru centre; part of semiconductor mission to boost Atmanirbhar Bharat and innovation.

India is moving from device assembly to advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing. The upcoming 2-nanometre chip milestone represents a major step toward technological self-reliance, according to the government.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated ARM’s new semiconductor design office in Bengaluru this week. The centre will focus on next-generation 2nm chip design, a first for India. Officials said the technology will power AI, mobile computing, and high-performance systems.

Smaller transistors mean more processing power, lighter products, and lower energy use. They also hold strategic importance for national security, defence, and space programs, the ministry stated.Under the India Semiconductor Mission, 10 projects have been approved across six states, attracting investments worth ₹1.6 lakh crore. The mission has an outlay of ₹76,000 crore to boost the ecosystem.

In May 2025, Vaishnaw inaugurated design centres in Noida and Bengaluru for 3nm chip development. India has already achieved 7nm and 5nm designs and is now pushing towards 2nm technology.Domestic startups and universities are also contributing. At least 23 chip projects are sanctioned, while 278 institutions are engaged in design and research. The government said this progress strengthens India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
