India’s tourism sector is emerging as a major economic driver, earning Rs 2.3 lakh crore in foreign exchange in 2023. The country now ranks 8th globally. Mega-events, campaigns like “Dekho Apna Desh,” and digital tie-ups with Netflix are boosting arrivals.
Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the government focuses on infrastructure, heritage revival, and themed circuits under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD. Forty new projects worth Rs 3,295 crore will develop lesser-known destinations.
Cultural events such as Odisha’s Bali Yatra, Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival, and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale will attract domestic and international visitors. Netflix collaborations will showcase Indian locations to global audiences, encouraging travel.
Domestic tourism is supported through better connectivity, improved amenities, homestay loans, and reduced GST on hotels. India aims to rank among the top four tourism economies globally within a decade through strong branding, visitor experiences, and year-round travel opportunities.
