India and Canada Reset Ties with New Roadmap for Cooperation

India Canada relations reset

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi marked a major step toward rebuilding trust between India and Canada. After two years of tension over the killing of a Sikh separatist in Canada, both countries agreed to focus on shared economic and strategic interests instead of past political disputes.

The key outcome was a “New Roadmap for India-Canada Relations,” which outlines steps to revive cooperation in trade, energy, technology, and education. Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Together, they agreed to restart ministerial talks on trade and investment and relaunch the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue focusing on clean energy and critical minerals.

Both nations also decided to revive science and technology partnerships, especially in AI, cybersecurity, and fintech. Canada plans to expand its academic presence in India, strengthening educational and people-to-people ties.

Security issues remain sensitive, but both sides are reopening communication channels to manage disputes respectfully. While challenges persist, the visit signalled a pragmatic and positive turn. With steady dialogue and cooperation, the two nations hope to rebuild trust and create a stronger foundation for future partnership.
