India and Mauritius: More Than Friends, A Family Bond

Prime Ministers of India and Mauritius together, highlighting the deep cultural and strategic family bond between the two nations.

India and Mauritius share a relationship that goes far beyond diplomacy. For decades, leaders of both nations have described their ties as not merely friendship but a family connection, rooted in history, culture, and shared identity.

The bond is unique because of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius, which forms a majority of the island’s population. Traditions, festivals, language, and food habits that originated in India are still alive in Mauritian society, making the people of both nations feel deeply connected. This cultural heritage has made Mauritius an extension of India in the Indian Ocean.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often said that when India engages with Mauritius, it is not “foreign policy” but “family policy.” This sentiment reflects the closeness of the relationship, which is reinforced through development projects, trade, education, and people-to-people ties.

India has been at the forefront of supporting Mauritius with infrastructure projects, healthcare, digital connectivity, and concessional loans. Iconic initiatives like the metro rail in Port Louis and the Supreme Court building stand as symbols of this cooperation. Mauritius, in turn, has consistently supported India at international forums, including its call for reforms in the United Nations.

Defence and maritime cooperation also highlight this family bond. Both countries jointly safeguard the Indian Ocean, conduct naval exercises, and work on disaster management, ensuring security and stability in the region.

The recent visit of Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to Varanasi showcased this emotional and strategic bond once again. The event was not just about diplomacy but about celebrating shared heritage and reaffirming that India and Mauritius are family in spirit, action, and values.
