Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the Blue Economy is central to India’s growth, combining prosperity, sustainability, and national strength.
Responding to an article by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, the PM noted that initiatives like Sagarmala, Deep Ocean Mission, and Harit Sagar Guidelines are empowering coastal communities, boosting innovation, and strengthening India’s leadership in global ocean governance.
India’s revised coastline now stretches over 11,098 km with an Exclusive Economic Zone of 2.4 million sq. km. Officials estimate this resource base could help build a $100 billion growth engine, generating jobs, supporting communities, and protecting marine ecosystems.
Dr. Singh wrote that “Blue Economy 2.0” focuses not only on traditional sectors but also emerging fields. The Deep Ocean Mission is enabling exploration of the seabed with the Matsya submersible, while the Sagarmala Programme is modernizing ports. For fisheries, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is driving a “Blue Revolution.”
Since its launch in 2020, PMMSY has helped India become the second-largest fish producer globally, achieving record production of 195 lakh tonnes in 2024–25. The scheme has created 58 lakh jobs, empowered nearly one lakh women, and boosted fisheries exports to ₹60,524 crore.
