India fuel E20 rollout sparks backlash among motorists

India fuel E20 rollout

India fuel E20 rollout has stirred anger among motorists as fuel stations across the country switch entirely to 20% ethanol-blended petrol. The move, meant to cut emissions and promote clean energy, has raised serious concerns about older cars and two-wheelers.

For years, India had set 2025 as the target for E20 adoption, but now it has become the only option at nearly all of the country’s 90,000 stations. Drivers who relied on E5 or E10 blends say they no longer have a choice, sparking confusion and frustration.

The government insists that E20 helps reduce carbon emissions. Officials admit older cars may face “marginal” drops in fuel efficiency, and some vehicles might require simple changes like new gaskets or rubber parts. Automakers, however, have given mixed signals. Skoda, Toyota, and Renault have all issued different guidance, leaving many drivers unsure of what fuel is safe for their cars.

Fuel station managers report rising anger, with some saying customers hurl abuse over the lack of options. Public interest litigation against the rollout will be heard in the Supreme Court. Until clarity arrives, many drivers are either risking E20 or buying expensive no-ethanol petrol where it is still available.
