India has sent 65 soldiers to participate in the Zapad 2025 military drills in Belarus and Russia. These exercises include nuclear weapons simulations. The move has raised concerns in NATO, as the drills are near Europe, particularly Poland. Military analysts believe the games aim to intimidate Europe.

India’s participation strengthens its ties with Russia. It also boosts cooperation, as many of India’s weapons are Russian-made. However, India’s growing defense autonomy will take time to reduce this reliance.

This comes as India faces tensions with the US and the EU. Disputes over Russian oil purchases and trade tariffs are ongoing. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has said the defense ties with Russia create challenges for India’s relations with the West.

India defends its oil purchases, saying it needs to meet growing energy demands. The country also points out double standards, with the EU continuing to buy Russian gas without sanctions.

The Zapad drills have heightened NATO’s concerns, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The drills put more pressure on the already tense situation in the region.
