India ‘Stops’ Buying Russian Oil After U.S. Tariff, Claims Treasury Secretary

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the U.S. Treasury Secretary said that India has stopped buying oil from Russia. He claimed that India started purchasing Russian oil after the Ukraine war began. According to him, this changed after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on countries that buy Russian oil.
The Secretary said that because of this tariff, India reduced its oil purchases from Russia and later stopped buying it completely. He added that the U.S. wants to pressure countries to stop supporting Russia’s economy during the war.
He also criticised some European countries and China, saying they are still buying large amounts of Russian oil.
India has earlier said that its energy purchases are based on national interest, affordability, and energy security. Indian officials have not yet responded to this latest claim made in Davos.
