Indian Grandfather Convicted Canada Deported After Harassment Case

An Indian grandfather visiting Canada has been deported after a court convicted him of criminally harassing two teenage girls outside a high school in Sarnia, Ontario. Jagjit Singh, 51, arrived in Canada in July on a six-month visitor visa to meet his newborn grandchild. Police said he soon began spending time near the smoking area outside a local high school.

Investigators reported that Singh approached teenage girls between September 8 and September 11. He tried to take photos with them and spoke about drugs and alcohol. One girl allowed a photo only in hopes that he would leave, but Singh moved close to her and tried to put his arm around her. She pushed him away and left the area.

Police said Singh then followed other female students as they walked off school property. Officers arrested him on September 16 and charged him with sexual interference and sexual assault. A new complaint led to a second arrest soon after.

Singh pleaded not guilty to sexual interference but admitted guilt to criminal harassment. The judge said he had no reason to be on school property and issued a deportation order. Singh also received three years of probation with restrictions on contact with minors and public places frequented by children.
