Indian Student Captured by Ukraine After Fighting for Russian Army

Indian Student Captured by Ukraine

A 22-year-old Indian student, named by Ukrainian media as Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein from Morbi, Gujarat, has been captured in Ukraine. Reports say he fought for the Russian army, but Indian officials are still checking the details.

According to The Kyiv Independent, Hussein first went to Russia for studies. Later, he was jailed for drug-related charges and sentenced to seven years. He said Russian authorities gave him two options—stay in prison or join the army.

“I didn’t want to stay in jail, so I signed the contract,” Hussein explained in a video released by Ukraine’s 63rd Mechanised Brigade. He added that he trained for only 16 days before being sent into combat on October 1.

After three days of fighting and a clash with his commander, Hussein said he walked to a Ukrainian trench and surrendered. “I put down my rifle and said I didn’t want to fight,” he added.

Hussein also claimed that Russia promised him money but never paid. He said he does not want to return to Russia, preferring even prison in Ukraine over what he called “lies in Russia.”

India has confirmed earlier that 12 Indians have died fighting for Russia, while several others are still missing.
