Indians Least Aware of AI, Yet Most Confident in Government Regulation
A recent survey covering 25 countries found that India ranks lowest in awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) among its citizens. Despite this low familiarity, Indians expressed high confidence in government oversight to regulate AI technologies effectively.
The survey assessed knowledge, understanding, and perceptions of AI, highlighting a gap between public awareness and trust in regulatory frameworks. While countries like the United States, Germany, and Japan reported higher awareness levels, respondents in India demonstrated optimism that the government would ensure AI is deployed ethically and safely.
Experts suggest that this paradox reflects the need for public education campaigns and policy transparency to bridge the awareness gap while maintaining public trust. Strengthening AI literacy could help citizens engage with emerging technologies more effectively and make informed decisions in an increasingly digital world.
The findings underscore the importance of balancing innovation with regulation in India’s AI landscape.
