Iran Protest Death Toll Sparks Dispute as Tensions Rise

Protest

Iran Protest Death Toll figures triggered controversy after the government released its first official count on Wednesday. Authorities said 3,117 people died during nationwide protests. The Interior Ministry reported that 2,427 victims included civilians and security forces. Officials gave no details about the remaining deaths.

However, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported at least 4,902 fatalities. The group warned the number could rise. Independent verification remains difficult due to internet shutdowns and reporting restrictions inside Iran.

The unrest began on December 28 and marked the deadliest protest wave in decades. Officials arrested nearly 26,500 people, according to rights groups. Activists fear authorities may carry out executions.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a sharp warning to the United States. He said Iran would respond forcefully to any new attack. His remarks followed the cancellation of his Davos invitation and increased US military movements toward the Middle East.

US naval and air deployments continue to expand in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group moved closer to Middle Eastern waters. Fighter jets and missile systems also arrived in nearby bases.

Separately, Kurdish militants claimed Iran attacked a base near Irbil. Tehran has not confirmed the strike. Observers warn that regional instability could worsen if tensions escalate further.
