The Andhra Pradesh High Court is set to hear a petition filed by former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy today, seeking directions to grant him opposition status. Jagan has approached the court after the Speaker of the Assembly, along with Assembly Affairs Minister Pyyavula Keshav, decided that he should not be recognized as the leader of the opposition.
In his petition, Jagan alleged that the Speaker’s ruling was influenced by political bias and animosity, rather than being based on law. He argued that there is no provision in the rules that restricts granting opposition status based on the number of seats alone. The petition emphasizes that constitutional and legislative norms should be followed to recognize a party as the official opposition, ensuring that democratic principles are upheld in the Assembly. The court’s decision could have significant political implications for the state’s legislative functioning.
