Shafiqur Rahman has sharply criticised Mohammed Shahabuddin over conflicting remarks about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her reported resignation in August 2024.
Rahman, head of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and opposition leader in parliament, accused the president of withholding key facts. In a Facebook post, he questioned Shahabuddin’s recent interview with Bangla daily Kaler Kantho. He said the president’s latest claims do not match what he told political leaders on August 5, 2024.
That day, Hasina resigned and fled the country after a mass uprising. Shahabuddin initially said he had received her resignation letter. Two months later, he told another publication that he had only heard about the resignation and lacked documentary proof.
Rahman asked whether the president would reconcile his earlier statement with his current remarks. He said the nation is aware of the events and called the conduct unacceptable.
The controversy comes amid tensions involving Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who led the interim government. Shahabuddin has accused Yunus of trying to remove him unconstitutionally during the political transition.
The dispute has revived debate over the legitimacy of the post-uprising government.
