Kannada, Marathi, and Urdu Associations Unite Against Closure of 40,000 Rural KPS Schools in Karnataka
Activists representing Kannada, Marathi, and Urdu language associations in Karnataka have announced plans to unite against the state government’s proposed closure of KPS (Karnataka Primary Schools) in rural areas. The move comes after reports that the government intends to shut down around 40,000 rural schools, citing declining enrollment and resource constraints.
Community leaders and activists argue that the closure would disproportionately affect children in remote villages, depriving them of access to basic education in their mother tongue. They warned that shutting down these schools could lead to language marginalisation, disrupt local education systems, and increase dropout rates among underprivileged students.
The associations plan to hold protests and submit petitions urging the government to reconsider the decision and implement alternative solutions, such as resource-sharing, infrastructure support, or consolidation without complete closure. Activists emphasised the importance of preserving local language education and ensuring equitable access to schooling for rural communities, framing the issue as both an educational and cultural concern
