Karnataka Farmers Protest Regional Discrimination in Sugarcane Pricing
Farmers in Karnataka have raised concerns over regional discrimination in sugarcane pricing, alleging that growers in certain areas are being paid less compared to others. The issue has sparked protests and demands for greater transparency and fairness in the pricing mechanism.
The farmers are particularly critical of the current system that links sugarcane prices to sugar recovery, which they say disproportionately affects farmers in regions with lower sugar content in cane. They are urging the government to delink the pricing from sugar recovery and instead ensure a uniform Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) across all regions, so that farmers receive equitable compensation for their produce.
Representatives from farmers’ associations have requested immediate intervention by the State government to address these disparities, warning that continued neglect could lead to broader unrest. The Karnataka government is yet to respond formally, but the protests highlight growing discontent among sugarcane growers over pricing policies.
