Kerala Becomes First Indian State to Eradicate Extreme Poverty, CM Calls It a New Era

Kerala has become the first state in India to be declared free from extreme poverty, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced on the occasion of Kerala Piravi. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, the CM described this achievement as the birth of a new era for the state, emphasizing the role of sustained social welfare schemes, effective governance, and inclusive economic growth in lifting citizens out of extreme deprivation. Vijayan credited targeted programs in health, education, housing, and nutrition, along with robust poverty alleviation initiatives, for this milestone. He highlighted that the state’s model demonstrates how coordinated policy measures and community participation can lead to substantial socio-economic progress. The CM also underscored that while Kerala has eradicated extreme poverty, continuous efforts are needed to ensure quality of life, reduce inequality, and further strengthen social security systems. Officials said this recognition reinforces Kerala’s position as a benchmark in sustainable development and human welfare in India.
