Kerala Government Loses Legal Battle Over Cheruvally Estate for Sabarimala Airport
The Kerala government on Sunday lost a legal battle over the ownership of the Cheruvally estate, a 2,263-acre property proposed as the site for the Sabarimala airport. The Pala Sub Court upheld the sale of the estate by Harrisons Malayalam Limited to the Ayana Charitable Trust in 2005, declaring it valid and legally binding.
The court ruling comes after the State had challenged the transaction, claiming that the land was required for the airport project and that the sale was improper. However, the Sub Court found that all legal procedures in the 2005 sale were duly followed, affirming the rights of the Ayana Charitable Trust as the legitimate owners of the property.
Officials said the verdict could have implications for the Sabarimala airport project, as acquiring the Cheruvally estate now would require negotiations with the current owners or exploring alternate sites. The government has not yet announced its next course of action regarding the project
