The Kerala government has issued detailed guidelines for the “antibiotic-smart” certification of hospitals and local self-government institutions (LSGs) as part of its efforts to tackle the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The initiative aims to promote the rational use of antibiotics and strengthen infection prevention and control practices across the healthcare system.
Officials said an innovative accreditation system has been developed by identifying key performance indicators related to antibiotic prescription, stewardship, surveillance, and awareness programmes. Each indicator has been assigned a specific weightage, and institutions will be awarded a performance score based on compliance, which will determine their certification status.
The guidelines apply to both public and private healthcare facilities, as well as LSGs involved in public health delivery. The government said the certification programme would encourage best practices, improve patient safety, and create accountability in antibiotic use. The move is expected to position Kerala as a leader in combating AMR through systematic, evidence-based interventions.
