Ladakh LG reviews security after Leh violence

Ladakh LG reviews security after Leh violence that left four people dead and more than 80 injured. On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta held a high-level meeting in Leh and urged security agencies to stay on high alert.

The clashes broke out a day earlier during a shutdown called by a group from the Leh Apex Body (LAB). Protesters demanded statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Violence spread quickly as mobs torched the BJP office and several vehicles. Authorities responded by clamping curfew in Leh town and nearby areas.

Gupta met senior officers from the police, CRPF, and civil administration. He stressed the need for coordination between agencies and directed them to take proactive steps to restore order. Officials also reviewed crowd-control measures and intelligence inputs to prevent more unrest.

The Centre blamed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s “provocative statements” for fueling anger. It also accused certain politically motivated groups of trying to derail ongoing talks with Ladakhi representatives. Wangchuk had staged a hunger strike over statehood and Sixth Schedule demands but ended it after the violence on September 24.

Ladakh LG reviews security after Leh violence at a tense time for the region. Security forces remain deployed across Leh, and the administration has tightened restrictions to ensure peace returns soon.
