The Lok Bhavan name change in Bihar marks an important step toward people-centric governance. The state government has officially renamed the historic Bihar Raj Bhavan as Bihar Lok Bhavan. This shift aims to bring the institution closer to the public and highlight its democratic purpose. With this Lok Bhavan name change, the building is no longer seen only as the Governor’s residence but as a space meant for official and public-oriented functions.
Robert L. Chongthu, Principal Secretary to the Governor, issued the official notice. He confirmed that the new name, Bihar Lok Bhavan, will be used for all government activities from now on. Even the official Raj Bhavan website has been updated to match the new title.
This move is part of a larger national decision. The Union Home Ministry directed all states and Union Territories to rename their Raj Bhavans as Lok Bhavan or Lok Niwas. The order was issued on November 25, 2025. Raj Bhavans in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Gujarat, and Tripura have also received new names. Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is now called Seva Teerth.
