Macron Names Sebastien Lecornu as France’s New Prime Minister, making him the country’s fourth leader in just one year. Lecornu, 39, is also the youngest defense minister in French history and has played a key role in France’s military buildup through 2030, driven by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
A former conservative, Lecornu joined Macron’s centrist movement in 2017. He has served in local governments, managed overseas territories, and helped lead Macron’s “great debate” during the yellow vest protests. In 2021, he opened talks on autonomy during unrest in Guadeloupe.
Macron Names Sebastien Lecornu as France’s New Prime Minister after lawmakers toppled his predecessor, Francois Bayrou, in a confidence vote. Bayrou, 74, pushed for sharp cuts in public spending, but Parliament rejected him, triggering another political crisis.
Lecornu now faces the tough job of drafting France’s budget, while also building a government. Macron asked him to first consult all parties in Parliament to secure agreement on spending before forming his cabinet.
Macron said Lecornu’s leadership will focus on protecting France’s independence, ensuring political stability, and serving the unity of the nation at a time of financial pressure and international challenges.
