The Madhya Pradesh government has approved a significant salary hike for MLAs and other public representatives. Legislators will now receive a monthly salary of ₹1.70 lakh, after an increment of ₹60,000. Former MLAs’ pensions have also been increased to ₹58,000 per month, offering major relief to retired representatives.
The salary hike extends beyond MLAs, benefiting the Chief Minister, Ministers, Ministers of State, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Leader of Opposition. Their pay and allowances will rise by 18% to 30%, substantially increasing their monthly incomes.
The revision will bring an additional financial burden on the state. Currently, monthly expenditure on the Chief Minister and Cabinet (30 members) is about ₹2.75 crore, while the Speaker’s office costs ₹1.85 lakh per month. Salaries of 199 MLAs cost the state approximately ₹2.18 crore monthly. With the revised structure, the government’s total monthly expenditure on salaries and allowances will climb to nearly ₹4.95 crore.
The government maintains that the increase is necessary considering the rising responsibilities and workload of elected officials.
