Madras HC Orders Inquiry Into Alleged Encroachment of Public Park
The Madras High Court has directed an inquiry by the District Collector and the Chennai Corporation into the alleged encroachment of a public park by a private hospital. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, emphasised that the matter is a serious concern affecting public space and civic rights.
The court observed that public parks play a critical role in providing green spaces, recreational areas, and environmental benefits to city residents, and any encroachment undermines community welfare. The inquiry is expected to determine the legality of the hospital’s claim over the land and recommend necessary actions to restore the park if encroachment is established.
Authorities have been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within a specified timeframe. Legal experts noted that the HC’s intervention underscores the judiciary’s role in safeguarding public property and environmental interests against unauthorized development.
