The Income Tax Department has told the Madras High Court that Jayalalithaa’s residence, Veda Nilayam, may be auctioned if the pending tax dues are not paid. The submission was made in response to a writ petition filed by her niece, J. Deepa, challenging the demand for income tax and wealth tax arrears.

The department said the outstanding taxes must be cleared as per the law. It added that failure to pay the dues could lead to attachment and auction of the property to recover the amount.

J. Deepa had approached the court, arguing that the tax demand was excessive and needed reconsideration. The High Court is currently hearing the matter and will examine both the petition and the department’s submission before passing orders.

The case highlights ongoing disputes over tax arrears related to high-profile properties and underlines the importance of timely compliance with tax laws.
