Madras High Court Defers Decision on SOP for Political Events
The Madras High Court has reserved its orders on framing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for political rallies and public meetings in Tamil Nadu. The decision came after the State government submitted a comprehensive 47-page draft SOP outlining guidelines for organising political events.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan took the draft into consideration and deferred its final decision to study the proposals in detail. The court has been examining the issue following concerns over public safety, traffic disruptions, and law-and-order challenges arising from large political gatherings.
The State’s draft SOP reportedly covers protocols related to crowd management, permissions, traffic coordination, sound regulation, and emergency response measures. It also seeks to balance political freedoms with public convenience and safety.
The court’s forthcoming order is expected to bring clarity on how political events should be regulated, ensuring both administrative preparedness and protection of citizens’ rights.
