The Madras High Court has dismissed actor Vijay’s plea seeking relief from a tax penalty of ₹1.5 crore. Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy refused to set aside the penalty, which was imposed for not voluntarily disclosing an additional income of ₹15 crore during the financial year 2015-16.

Vijay had approached the court asking for waiver or reduction of the penalty, arguing that the tax authorities had already calculated his income and that the penalty was excessive. However, the court held that the penalty was correctly imposed under the Income Tax Act because the actor had failed to disclose substantial income voluntarily, as required by law.

The judgment reinforces the importance of full transparency and compliance in income tax matters. The court’s decision means that Vijay will have to pay the ₹1.5-crore penalty as ordered. Tax experts said the case sets an example for high-income earners to maintain proper disclosures and avoid penalties.
