Madras High Court Restrains Use of Ilaiyaraaja’s Songs in Film ‘Dude’
The Madras High Court has granted an interim injunction barring the use of two iconic Ilaiyaraaja songs — Nooru Varusham and Karutha Machan — in the upcoming Tamil film Dude, starring Pradeep Ranganathan. Justice N. Senthilkumar issued the order after the composer filed a plea stating that the filmmakers had not obtained the necessary permissions to use the tracks, originally featured in earlier Tamil films.
Ilaiyaraaja argued that he retains copyright over his compositions and that any unauthorised usage violates his intellectual property rights. The court, acknowledging his claim, restrained the producers from incorporating the songs until the matter is fully adjudicated.
The injunction is expected to impact the film’s post-production plans, as the makers may now need to either secure rights or modify the soundtrack. The case highlights ongoing disputes in the Tamil film industry regarding music rights and copyright ownership, especially for older works.
