Maharashtra Rain Havoc: 10 Dead, Mumbai Hit Hard

Residents evacuated during Maharashtra rain havoc in Paithan

Heavy rains in Maharashtra have caused widespread disruption, claiming at least 10 lives in the past 24 hours and forcing the evacuation of over 11,800 people, officials said. Mumbai and surrounding suburbs have experienced intense rainfall since Saturday, while several districts in Marathwada and northern Maharashtra recorded heavy downpours.

Nashik district reported four deaths, including three from a house collapse. Dharashiv and Ahilyanagar recorded two fatalities each, while Jalna and Yavatmal reported one death each. Rising inflows into the Jayakwadi dam on the Godavari river led authorities to open all gates, prompting the evacuation of around 7,000 residents from Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Harsul circle alone recorded 196 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Several Marathwada districts, including Beed, Nanded, and Parbhani, were heavily affected. NDRF teams rescued 12 people stranded at a temple in Beed and 970 residents in Nanded city. Low-lying areas of Paranda were flooded due to releases from the Sina Kolegaon dam, and 3,615 people were evacuated to safety.

In Mumbai, some localities recorded over 50 mm of rain between 8 am and 1 pm on Sunday. Traffic remained mostly smooth across major junctions and underpasses, while Thane and Palghar districts also received heavy showers.

The IMD has issued red alerts for several districts and predicts moderate to heavy rain across Maharashtra until October 4. Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official safety advisories.
