Mamata Banerjee SIR Row Deepens Ahead of Bengal Elections

Mamata Banerjee SIR row has intensified as the West Bengal Chief Minister steps up her fight against the SIR process. She has taken the issue from protests to legal action. Banerjee has written again to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She has demanded an immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision in the state.

The Chief Minister claims the process began without proper planning or trained staff. She warns that serious irregularities could disenfranchise millions of voters. Banerjee says such exclusions would damage democracy and constitutional values. She has also raised concerns over the absence of Booth Level Agents during hearings. According to her, this weakens transparency and fairness.

Banerjee alleges fear caused by SIR has led to health emergencies among citizens. She also accused the BJP of using voter revision as an election strategy. She claimed outsiders were being added to voter lists before the 2026 Assembly polls.

The Election Commission released a draft voter list on December 16. More than 5.8 million names were removed in the first phase. The voter count dropped from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore. The second phase began on December 27. It involves hearings for 1.67 crore voters.
