Mamata Banerjee remembers Netai village victims on the fifteenth anniversary of the tragic firing incident in West Bengal. On Wednesday, the Chief Minister paid homage to nine villagers killed on January 7, 2011, in Jhargram district.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Banerjee offered her humble respects and salutations to those who lost their lives. She described the victims as martyrs of Netai and recalled the painful chapter in the state’s history. The incident occurred when armed vigilantes opened fire on villagers, killing four women and five men. At least 28 others suffered injuries.
Netai village lies near Lalgarh, which was a Maoist-affected region at that time. Reports alleged that the armed group, known as Harmad Bahini, had shelter inside the house of a local CPI(M) leader. Tensions escalated after villagers resisted threats and alleged torture by the armed men.
The firing sparked massive outrage across West Bengal. The incident soon turned into a major political issue ahead of the 2011 Assembly elections. Authorities later handed the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a detailed probe.
Every year, political leaders and residents gather to remember the victims. The day continues to symbolise resistance, loss, and the demand for justice in the region.
