Manipur Firing on Assam Rifles Convoy Kills 2 Soldiers, 4 Injured

Security forces at Bishnupur district after Assam Rifles convoy ambush in Manipur

A deadly ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur’s Bishnupur district has left two soldiers dead and at least four others injured. The attack occurred on Saturday when unidentified armed men opened fire on the paramilitary vehicle, triggering panic in the conflict-hit region.

According to official reports, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was among the two personnel who lost their lives in the firing. The injured jawans were immediately evacuated to a nearby military hospital for treatment. Initial reports indicated that four soldiers sustained bullet wounds, though some sources suggest the number of injured could be as high as five.

Security forces swiftly launched a combing operation in and around the ambush site to trace the attackers. Heavy deployment has been ordered in sensitive areas of Bishnupur and adjoining districts to prevent further escalation. Authorities suspect that insurgent groups active in the region may be behind the assault, but no outfit has claimed responsibility yet.

This latest incident highlights the fragile security situation in Manipur, which has witnessed frequent ethnic violence and militant attacks in recent months. The central government has promised a strong response, stating that sacrifices of the Assam Rifles personnel will not go in vain.

The Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” play a crucial role in counter-insurgency and border security operations. Saturday’s attack adds to the long list of challenges faced by security forces deployed in the northeastern state.

As investigations continue, the incident has reignited concerns about the safety of security convoys in conflict-torn Manipur, where peace remains elusive.
