MEA: Energy Imports Driven by Consumer Interest, Not Pressure
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that the country’s oil and gas import decisions are guided by national interests and consumer needs, amid recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia — a statement that has drawn widespread attention.
In response, the MEA emphasized that India maintains a diversified energy strategy to ensure affordable and secure supplies for its growing economy. Officials reiterated that energy security remains a top priority and decisions are made based on market dynamics, not external pressure.
While India has increased its imports from various global suppliers, including Russia, it continues to balance geopolitical considerations with domestic requirements. The statement underscores New Delhi’s stance of strategic autonomy in foreign policy and trade, particularly in sensitive sectors like energy.
