The Meghalaya government will convert its entire auto-rickshaw fleet to electric vehicles (EVs) ahead of the National Games 2027, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Friday. This plan aims to modernize urban transport and reduce pollution across the state.
Under the policy, all new auto-rickshaws will be electric. The government will provide incentives and financial support to drivers for switching from petrol or diesel vehicles. Additionally, it will develop charging stations at strategic locations to ensure smooth adoption.
CM Sangma said, “We want to create a cleaner, greener Meghalaya. Electric autos will improve commuter experience and reduce the carbon footprint.” Officials added that this initiative aligns with India’s National Electric Mobility Mission and supports the country’s net-zero emission goals.
The government will also run awareness campaigns and training programs for drivers. Urban planning and transport authorities are coordinating with EV manufacturers to implement the fleet efficiently. Experts believe the move will boost local employment in green mobility and encourage private EV investment.
Moreover, the EV fleet initiative could serve as a model for other northeastern states. It demonstrates how sustainable transport can integrate with major events like the National Games. Officials expect that by 2027, the streets of Meghalaya will see a modern, eco-friendly auto fleet ready to transport athletes and visitors.
With the National Games approaching, Meghalaya’s EV auto fleet initiative highlights the state’s commitment to sustainability, cleaner air, and innovative public transport solutions.
