Security forces seized 4.444 kg of methamphetamine tablets, valued at ₹13.33 crore, during an operation near the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district. The Assam Rifles carried out the operation after receiving a specific intelligence tip-off.
Operation Launched After Intelligence Alert
According to the Assam Rifles, the operation began on November 25 after inputs indicated possible narcotics movement along World Bank Road in the Zokhawthar area. This location is a major transit point for cross-border drug trafficking.
The team conducted surveillance and soon noticed suspicious activity. As a result, they intervened and recovered the meth tablets, a psychotropic substance widely trafficked in the region due to its high market demand.
One person, Bawi Kanthanga, a Myanmar national, was arrested on the spot. Officials believe the seized consignment was connected to a larger drug network operating across the porous international border.
Legal Action and Further Investigation
The Assam Rifles handed over the seized tablets to the Excise and Narcotics Department, Champhai, for detailed analysis. Further interrogation and investigation are underway. Officials said more arrests may follow as the network is traced.
Crackdown on Cross-Border Drug Trafficking
Zokhawthar lies along a sensitive stretch of the India-Myanmar border and has seen multiple narcotics-related cases. Security forces conduct regular operations to curb the smuggling of methamphetamine, heroin, and other contraband believed to originate from drug-producing hubs in the region.
Moreover, authorities stressed that enhanced border surveillance and intelligence-based operations have led to several major seizures this year. Continued cooperation between central forces and state agencies remains essential for stopping drug smuggling and ensuring border security.
