Modern Pentathlon Obstacle Course Debuts at World Championships

The Modern Pentathlon World Championships 2025 in Kaunas, Lithuania has introduced a dramatic change to one of the Olympic movement’s oldest sports. For the first time, athletes are competing in an Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) event, replacing the long-standing equestrian show-jumping round.

The new 70-meter obstacle course features monkey bars, rope swings, balance beams, and a steep wall climb, demanding speed, agility, and endurance. The decision follows years of debate after controversies around horse welfare at the Tokyo Olympics, which prompted the governing body to modernize the event.

Athletes have welcomed the switch. Competitors say the course is both physically intense and visually exciting, offering a fairer and more engaging challenge. American athlete Tyler Evans noted that training for OCR requires completely new muscle groups compared to horse riding, but admitted he enjoyed the transition. Others believe the new format will attract younger fans and give the sport greater visibility on television.

The move is also seen as a step towards securing the sport’s Olympic future. With obstacle racing already popular globally, its debut at the World Championships signals a bold shift, reshaping Modern Pentathlon for a new generation.
