Monsoon Rains Submerge Northern India: Uttarakhand, Jammu, Punjab, Bihar Reeling Under Floods

Northern India is facing the fury of heavy monsoon rains that have triggered floods, cloudbursts, and landslides across several states, leaving thousands stranded and causing widespread damage.

In Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, flash floods—believed to have been sparked by a cloudburst or glacial outburst—devastated Dharali village. At least five people have died, while more than 50 remain missing. Entire portions of the village were buried under debris as high as 15 meters. Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams have been deployed, but rescue work is being slowed by damaged roads and relentless rainfall.

In Jammu’s Kishtwar district, tragedy struck during the Machail Mata Yatra when a sudden cloudburst hit Chositi village. The resulting flash flood claimed over 65 lives, injured more than 300 people, and left over 200 missing. Pilgrims as well as local residents were caught in the disaster. Rescue and relief teams, including helicopters, are working around the clock to reach survivors in remote areas.

Further west, Punjab continues to battle swollen rivers and overflowing canals. Flooded fields in Fazilka and Ferozepur have forced villagers to relocate. Relief camps are active, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has promised compensation for losses.

Meanwhile, Bihar reels under severe floods across seven districts, affecting nearly 800,000 people. Rescue operations are ongoing.
