A Motihari lockup death triggered violent protests in Bihar’s East Champaran district after a rape accused died inside the Kalyanpur police station. The Motihari lockup death quickly led to anger on the streets, with locals pelting stones at the police station.
The deceased was identified as Ghaffar Mian (55), a resident of Madan Sirsiya Panchayat. Police had arrested him on charges of raping a mentally ill woman. He was kept in custody after a preliminary investigation.
Police officials said Ghaffar died by suicide using a lungi inside the lockup. However, his family rejected this claim. They accused the police of negligence and delay in informing them about the incident.
