MP Kang seeks Vice President meeting on Panjab University autonomy as concerns over the institution’s democratic structure continue to grow. The issue has sparked intense debate in Punjab, and MP Kang seeks Vice President meeting to ensure the Centre understands the depth of public anger.
MP Malvinder Singh Kang has formally asked for an appointment with the Vice President of India to raise objections regarding the recent decisions on Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate elections. He argues that the Centre’s earlier move to alter PU’s governing bodies created serious resentment among Punjabis.
He reminded the Vice President that the Central Government pulled back the controversial October 28, 2025 notification only because people strongly opposed it. According to Kang, the episode showed how deeply Punjabis value the university’s long-standing autonomy.
Kang plans to urge the Vice President, who also serves as the University’s Chancellor, to safeguard PU’s independence. He believes that any attempt to weaken PU’s democratic functioning will harm students, teachers, and the academic ecosystem of the region.
He also intends to highlight that Panjab University plays a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape of north India. Therefore, he insists that only transparent and democratic processes should guide its governance.
With this request, Kang hopes the Centre will respect public sentiment and maintain PU’s historic autonomous character.
