Navratri 2025 will begin on Monday, 22 September, with the Ashwina Ghatasthapana ritual, also called Kalash Sthapana. This marks the formal invocation of Goddess Durga and the start of nine days of worship, fasting, and celebration.
The auspicious Ghatasthapana Muhurat is from 6:14 a.m. to 7:56 a.m. (1 hour 42 minutes). For those unable to perform it in the morning, the Abhijit Muhurat from 11:53 a.m. to 12:42 p.m. is also favourable.
What is Kalash Sthapana?
Kalash Sthapana involves placing a sacred pot (Kalash) filled with water, betel nut, and coins. It is decorated with mango leaves, red cloth, rice, and topped with a coconut. The Kalash symbolises purity, prosperity, and divine power and is treated as a representation of Goddess Durga.
Kalash Sthapana Vidhi (Steps)
-
Clean the puja area and sprinkle Gangajal.
-
Place a wooden chowki, cover with red cloth.
-
Fill the Kalash with water, betel nut, and coins.
-
Arrange mango leaves and place a coconut wrapped in red cloth.
-
Invoke Goddess Durga with prayers and mantras.
Once placed, the Kalash should not be moved. Devotees should light a diya every morning and evening, and keep the Kalash water clean.
