The NDA Bihar Rajya Sabha Sweep looks almost certain after the alliance’s strong victory in the state election. The NDA Bihar Rajya Sabha Sweep could give the ruling bloc all 10 Upper House seats from Bihar during the remaining term of the Narendra Modi government.
Of these 10 seats, the RJD holds three. This gives the NDA an opportunity to increase its strength in the 245-member Rajya Sabha by three more seats. The NDA currently stands at 133 seats.
Five seats will go to polls next year. Another five will come up for election in 2028. The present Modi government will run until May 2029.
Next year, the terms of RJD’s Prem Chand Gupta, AD Singh, JD(U)’s Harivansh and Ram Nath Thakur, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha will end. To win a seat, a party needs at least 42 MLAs. With 202 MLAs, the NDA can claim four seats outright through first-preference votes.
The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan doesn’t have enough numbers to secure even one seat. This allows the NDA to secure the fifth seat through second-preference votes.
In 2028, the terms of RJD’s Faiyaz Ahmed, BJP’s Satish Chandra Dubey, JD(U)’s Khiru Mahto, BJP’s Manan Kumar Mishra, and BJP’s Shambu Sharan Patel will end, setting up another round of high-stakes contests.
