A 19-year-old NEET aspirant was allegedly killed by cattle smugglers in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, triggering widespread protests and anger among locals. The shocking incident has once again highlighted the growing menace of cattle smuggling in the state.
According to police, the victim was returning home late Sunday evening when he confronted a group of suspected cattle smugglers transporting animals illegally. An altercation reportedly broke out, during which the smugglers attacked the student with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The victim, identified as a 19-year-old preparing for the medical entrance exam NEET, was described by neighbors as hardworking and dedicated. His untimely death has sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding swift justice and stronger action against cattle smuggling gangs.
Protests erupted in several parts of Gorakhpur on Monday, with demonstrators blocking roads and staging sit-ins outside police stations. Protesters accused authorities of failing to curb the growing network of cattle smugglers operating in the region. Heavy police deployment was ordered to prevent escalation, and senior officials assured that the culprits would be arrested soon.
Political reactions have also poured in, with opposition parties slamming the government over law and order lapses. Social media has seen an outpouring of grief and anger, with many users demanding that the case be fast-tracked.
Police said multiple teams have been formed to track down the accused. “We will ensure the strictest punishment for those responsible,” a senior Gorakhpur officer said.
The incident has shaken the district, with the victim’s family and fellow students calling for stronger measures to ensure safety and justice.
