New Faces to Replace Elected Members

Bihar Legislative Council changes overview

Bihar Legislative Council changes have started after four Council members won in the 18th Bihar Assembly elections. These members include former Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary, former Health Minister Mangal Pandey, Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha, and Radhacharan Sah. With their shift to the Assembly, new leaders will soon enter the Council. The key phrase Bihar Legislative Council changes reflects the current political transition in the state.

Samrat Chaudhary won from Tarapur on a BJP ticket, and Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha won from Jagdishpur as a JDU candidate. Both joined the Council in June 2020 and will complete their term in June 2026.

Mangal Pandey won from Siwan on a BJP ticket. He entered the Council in May 2024 with a term ending in 2030. Radhacharan Sah, elected earlier as Deputy Speaker from the Bhojpur/Buxar quota, is now an MLA from Sandesh on a JDU ticket. His Deputy Speaker term lasts until April 2028.

Experts say these members must resign from the Council before taking oath as MLAs. If they do not resign, their Council membership ends automatically when they take the Assembly oath. If vacancies appear, the Election Commission must conduct elections within six months.
