New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said he will work with President Donald Trump on any agenda that helps New Yorkers. Mamdani will meet Trump at the White House on Friday in their first discussion since his election victory on November 4.

Speaking to reporters, Mamdani said he disagrees with the President on many issues but will pursue every opportunity that makes the city more affordable. He plans to tell Trump that he will support helpful policies and strongly oppose anything that hurts residents.

Mamdani’s team requested the White House meeting because he wants to work with anyone who improves life for the more than 8.5 million people in New York City. He noted that new mayors traditionally meet the President due to the city and federal government’s shared interests.

He said the meeting comes at a time when many Americans face rising costs and cities struggle to balance public safety with national policies. Mamdani added that voters backed two very different candidates for a similar reason: they want action on the cost-of-living crisis.

Trump called Mamdani a “communist” in a Truth Social post and criticized his policies, but agreed to hold the meeting. Mamdani became the first South Asian and Muslim elected to lead New York City after defeating Curtis Sliwa and Andrew Cuomo.
