The Nitish Kumar hijab controversy has created a major political and social debate in Bihar. The issue began during an appointment ceremony for Ayush doctors at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Samvad.
During the event, a newly appointed female Ayush doctor approached Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to receive her appointment letter. She was wearing a hijab. At that moment, the Chief Minister questioned the hijab and removed it from her face. The incident was caught on video and spread quickly on social media.
Religious leaders strongly criticised the act. Maulana Mufti Mohammad Sayedur Rahman Qasmi said the hijab represents dignity and respect for women. He stated that the Nitish Kumar hijab controversy reflects an insult and demanded a public apology from the Chief Minister.
The woman doctor appeared uncomfortable, and an official quickly moved her aside. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary was seen trying to stop the situation.
The Chief Minister’s Office later said that appointment letters were given to over 1,000 Ayush doctors, including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Unani practitioners. However, the video could not be independently verified.
Opposition parties, including RJD and Congress, attacked Nitish Kumar and shared the video online, intensifying the political storm.
