Kathmandu: Former Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has left army protection and moved into a private home. He spent nine days under Nepal Army security after violent Gen Z protests forced him to step down on September 9.
That day, protesters burned Oli’s Balkot house in Bhaktapur. They also set fire to parts of the Prime Minister’s Office. The Nepal Army rescued him by helicopter and took him to the Shivapuri forest barracks north of Kathmandu.
Local reports say Oli is now living in Gundu, Bhaktapur, around 15 km from the capital. Officials have not confirmed the exact location for safety reasons.
Several other ex-prime ministers, including Pushpakamal Dahal, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Jhalanath Khanal, and Madhav Kumar Nepal, also stayed briefly under army guard. Most have since left. Deuba and his wife, former foreign minister Arzju Rana Deuba, remain in army care while receiving hospital treatment for protest injuries.
Oli’s party, CPN-UML, will hold a Constitution Day event on September 19 in Lalitpur. It is unclear if Oli will attend. Nepal is also marking ten years since its 2015 constitution with a state programme in Kathmandu.
