Orange Alert for North Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Montha Nears Coast
An orange alert has been issued for several districts in north Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Montha advances over the southwest Bay of Bengal, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai said on Monday. In its Nowcast valid till 1 p.m., the RMC predicted moderate rainfall over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, and Ranipet districts. Heavy showers accompanied by strong winds are expected in coastal and adjoining areas as the system moves west-northwestward. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, and local authorities have been asked to stay on alert for possible waterlogging and disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier said Montha is likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by October 28. Disaster management teams have been kept on standby, and precautionary measures are being implemented to ensure public safety amid the worsening weather conditions.
